Amos 9:1

AMP: I saw [in a vision] the Lord standing at the altar, and He said,“Destroy the capitals (tops) of the pillars so that the thresholds will shake,And break them on the heads of all of the people!Then I will kill the rest of them with the sword;They will not have a fugitive who will get away,Or a survivor who will escape.

ASV: I saw the Lord standing beside the altar: and he said, Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape.

BSB: I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said:“Strike the tops of the pillarsso that the thresholds shake.Topple them on the heads of all the people,and I will kill the rest with the sword.None of those who flee will get away;none of the fugitives will escape.

DARBY: I saw the Lord standing upon the altar; and he said, Smite the chapiter that the thresholds may shake; and break all of them in pieces, in the head; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not get away by flight, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.

DRA: I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said: Strike the hinges, and let the lintels be shook: for there is covetousness in the head of them all, and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall be no flight for them: they shall flee, and he that shall flee of them shall not be delivered.

KJV: I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.

Amos 9:2

AMP: “Though they dig into Sheol [to hide in the deepest pit],From there My hand will take them [for judgment];And though they climb up to heaven [to hide in the realm of light],From there will I bring them down [for judgment].

ASV: Though they dig into Sheol, thence shall my hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

Amos 9:3

AMP: “Though they hide on the summit of [Mount] Carmel,I will track them down and take them from there;And though they hide from My sight on the floor of the sea,From there I shall command the serpent and it will bite them.

ASV: And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them.

BSB: Though they hide themselves atop Carmel,there I will track them and seize them;and though they hide from Me at the bottom of the sea,there I will command the serpent to bite them.

Amos 9:4

AMP: “And though they go into captivity before their enemies,From there I shall command the sword to kill them,And I will set My eyes against them for evil (judgment, punishment) and not for good [that is, not for correction leading to restoration].”

ASV: And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

BSB: Though they are driven by their enemies into captivity,there I will command the sword to slay them.I will fix My eyes upon themfor harm and not for good.”

Amos 9:5

AMP: ¶The Lord God of hosts [the Omnipotent Ruler],It is He who touches the earth [in judgment] and it melts,And all who dwell on it mourn [in despair and fear],And all of it rises up like the NileAnd subsides like the Nile of Egypt;

ASV: For the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, [is] he that toucheth the land and it melteth, and all that dwell therein shall mourn; and it shall rise up wholly like the River, and shall sink again, like the River of Egypt;

BSB: The Lord GOD of Hosts,He who touches the earth and it melts,and all its dwellers mourn —all the land rises like the Nile,then sinks like the river of Egypt —

Amos 9:6

AMP: It is He who builds His upper chambers in the heavensAnd has established His vaulted dome (the firmament of heaven) over the earth,He who calls to the waters of the seaAnd pours them out on the face of the earth—The Lord is His name.

ASV: [it is] he that buildeth his chambers in the heavens, and hath founded his vault upon the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth; Jehovah is his name.

BSB: He builds His upper rooms in the heavensand founds His vault upon the earth.He summons the waters of the seaand pours them over the face of the earth.The LORD is His name.

Amos 9:7

AMP: ¶“Are you [degenerate ones] not as the [despised] sons of Ethiopia to Me,O sons of Israel?” says the Lord.“Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt,And the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans (Syrians) from Kir?

ASV: Are ye not as the children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith Jehovah. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

BSB: “Are you not like the Cushites to Me,O children of Israel?”declares the LORD.“Did I not bring Israelup from the land of Egypt,the Philistines from Caphtor,and the Arameans from Kir?

DARBY: Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith Jehovah. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

Amos 9:8

AMP: “Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful [northern] kingdom [of Israel’s ten tribes]And I shall destroy it from the face of the earth;But I shall not totally destroy the house of Jacob [that is, the entire nation of Israel],”Says the Lord.

ASV: Behold, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; save that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith Jehovah.

BSB: Surely the eyes of the Lord GODare on the sinful kingdom,and I will destroy it from the face of the earth.Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”declares the LORD.

Amos 9:9

AMP: “For behold, I am commanding,And I shall shake and sift the house of Israel among all nations [and cause it to tremble]Like grain is shaken in a sieve [removing the chaff],But not a kernel [of the faithful remnant] shall fall to the ground and be lost [from My sight]. [Lev 26:33; Deut 28:64; Hos 9:17]

ASV: For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like as [grain] is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least kernel fall upon the earth.

BSB: “For surely I will give the command,and I will shake the house of Israelamong all the nationsas grain is sifted in a sieve;but not a pebble will reach the ground.

DARBY: For behold, I command, and I will shake the house of Israel to and fro among all the nations, like as one shaketh [corn] in a sieve; yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

Amos 9:10

AMP: “All the sinners among My people will die by the sword,Those who say [defiantly], ‘The disaster will not overtake or confront us.’

ASV: All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, The evil shall not overtake nor meet us.

BSB: All the sinners among My peoplewill die by the sword —all those who say,‘Disaster will never draw near or confront us.’”

Amos 9:11

AMP: ¶“In that day I shall raise up and restore the fallen tabernacle (booth) of David,And wall up its breaches [in the city walls];I will also raise up and restore its ruinsAnd rebuild it as it was in the days of old,

ASV: In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

Amos 9:12

AMP: That they may possess the remnant of Edom (ancient enemies)And all the nations that are called by My name,”Says the Lord who does this. [Acts 15:15-17]

ASV: that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations that are called by my name, saith Jehovah that doeth this.

Amos 9:13

AMP: ¶“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,“When the plowman shall overtake the one who gathers the harvest,And the one who treads the grapes [shall overtake] him who sows the seed [for the harvest continues until planting time];When the mountains will drip sweet wineAnd all the hills shall melt [that is, everything that was once barren will overflow with streams of blessing]. [Lev 26:5; Joel 3:18]

ASV: Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

BSB: “Behold, the days are coming,”declares the LORD,“when the plowman will overtake the reaperand the treader of grapes, the sower of seed.The mountains will drip with sweet wine,with which all the hills will flow.

ASV: And I will bring back the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Amos 9:15

AMP: “I will also plant them on their land,And they shall never again be uprooted from their landWhich I have given them,”Says the Lord your God.

ASV: And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, saith Jehovah thy God.

BSB: I will firmly plant them in their own land,never again to be uprootedfrom the land that I have given them,”says the LORD your God.
