Hebrews 4:1

AMP: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still remains and is freely offered today, let us fear, in case any one of you may seem to come short of reaching it or think he has come too late.

ASV: Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

BSB: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.

DARBY: Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you might seem to have failed [of it].

DRA: Let us fear therefore lest the promise being left of entering into his rest, any of you should be thought to be wanting.

KJV: Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

Hebrews 4:2

AMP: For indeed we have had the good news [of salvation] preached to us, just as the Israelites also [when the good news of the promised land came to them]; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not united with faith [in God] by those who heard.

ASV: For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard.

BSB: For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.

DARBY: For indeed we have had glad tidings presented to us, even as they also; but the word of the report did not profit *them*, not being mixed with faith in those who heard.

DRA: For unto us also it hath been declared, in like manner as unto them. But the word of hearing did not profit them, not being mixed with faith of those things they heard.

KJV: For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Hebrews 4:3

AMP: For we who believe [that is, we who personally trust and confidently rely on God] enter that rest [so we have His inner peace now because we are confident in our salvation, and assured of His power], just as He has said,“As I swore [an oath] in My wrath,They shall not enter My rest,”[this He said] although His works were completed from the foundation of the world [waiting for all who would believe]. [Ps 95:11]

ASV: For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

BSB: Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said:“So I swore on oath in My anger,‘They shall never enter My rest.’”And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.

DARBY: For we enter into the rest who have believed; as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest; although the works had been completed from [the] foundation of [the] world.

DRA: For we, who have believed, shall enter into rest; as he said: As I have sworn in my wrath; If they shall enter into my rest; and this indeed when the works from the foundation of the world were finished.

KJV: For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 4:4

AMP: For somewhere [in Scripture] He has said this about the seventh day: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; [Gen 2:2]

ASV: For he hath said somewhere of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works;

BSB: For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”

DARBY: For he has said somewhere of the seventh [day] thus, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works:

DRA: For in a certain place he spoke of the seventh day thus: And God rested the seventh day from all his works.

KJV: For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

Hebrews 4:5

AMP: and again in this, “They shall not enter My rest.” [Ps 95:11]

ASV: and in this [place] again, They shall not enter into my rest.

BSB: And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”

DARBY: and in this again, If they shall enter into my rest.

DRA: And in this place again: If they shall enter into my rest.

KJV: And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Hebrews 4:6

AMP: Therefore, since the promise remains for some to enter His rest, and those who formerly had the good news preached to them failed to [grasp it and did not] enter because of [their unbelief evidenced by] disobedience,

ASV: Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience,

BSB: Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,

DARBY: Seeing therefore it remains that some enter into it, and those who first received the glad tidings did not enter in on account of not hearkening to the word,

DRA: Seeing then it remaineth that some are to enter into it, and they, to whom it was first preached, did not enter because of unbelief:

KJV: Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

Hebrews 4:7

AMP: He again sets a definite day, [a new] “Today,” [providing another opportunity to enter that rest by] saying through David after so long a time, just as has been said before [in the words already quoted],“Today if you hear His voice,Do not harden your hearts.” [Ps 95:7, 8]

ASV: he again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before), To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts.

BSB: God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

DARBY: again he determines a certain day, saying, in David, 'To-day,' after so long a time; (according as it has been said before), To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

DRA: Again he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time, as it is above said: To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

KJV: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Hebrews 4:8

AMP: [This mention of a rest was not a reference to their entering into Canaan.] For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak about another day [of opportunity] after that.

ASV: For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

BSB: For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

DARBY: For if Jesus had brought them into rest, he would not have spoken afterwards about another day.

DRA: For if Jesus had given them rest, he would never have afterwards spoken of another day.

KJV: For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

DARBY: There remains then a sabbatism to the people of God.

DRA: There remaineth therefore a day of rest for the people of God.

KJV: There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Hebrews 4:10

AMP: For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own. [Gen 2:2]

ASV: For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his.

BSB: For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.

DARBY: For he that has entered into his rest, he also has rested from his works, as God did from his own.

DRA: For he that is entered into his rest, the same also hath rested from his works, as God did from his.

KJV: For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:11

AMP: Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness].

ASV: Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience.

BSB: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.

KJV: Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Hebrews 4:12

AMP: For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.

ASV: For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.

BSB: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

DARBY: For the word of God [is] living and operative, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and penetrating to [the] division of soul and spirit, both of joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of [the] heart.

DRA: For the word of God is living and effectual, and more piercing than any two edged sword; and reaching unto the division of the soul and the spirit, of the joints also and the marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

ASV: And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

BSB: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

DARBY: And there is not a creature unapparent before him; but all things [are] naked and laid bare to his eyes, with whom we have to do.

DRA: Neither is there any creature invisible in his sight: but all things are naked and open to his eyes, to whom our speech is.

KJV: Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Hebrews 4:14

AMP: Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior].

ASV: Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

BSB: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.

AMP: Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

ASV: Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help [us] in time of need.
