Hosea 13:1

AMP: When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling and terror.He exalted himself [above the other tribes] in Israel;But through [the worship of] Baal he became guilty and died [spiritually, and then came ruin, sealing Israel’s doom as a nation].

ASV: When Ephraim spake, there was trembling; he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

BSB: When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;he was exalted in Israel.But he incurred guilt through Baal,and he died.

DARBY: When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling; he exalted himself in Israel: but he trespassed through Baal, and he died.

Hosea 13:2

AMP: And now they sin more and more,And make for themselves molten images,Idols skillfully made from their silver [as it pleased them],All of them the work of the craftsmen.They say of these [very works of their hands], “Let those who sacrifice kiss and show respect to the calves [as if they were living gods]!”

ASV: And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, even idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

BSB: Now they sin more and moreand make for themselves cast images,idols skillfully made from their silver,all of them the work of craftsmen.People say of them,“They offer human sacrificeand kiss the calves!”

Hosea 13:3

AMP: Therefore they will be [swiftly dissipated] like the morning cloudOr like dew which soon disappears,Like chaff which swirls with the whirlwind from the threshing floor,And like smoke from the chimney or through the window [worthless and without substance—they will vanish].

ASV: Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the dew that passeth early away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

BSB: Therefore they will be like the morning mist,like the early dew that vanishes,like chaff blown from a threshing floor,like smoke through an open window.

DARBY: Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the lattice.

Hosea 13:4

AMP: ¶Yet I have been the Lord your GodSince [the time you became a nation in] the land of Egypt;And you were not to know any god except Me,For there is no savior besides Me.

ASV: Yet I am Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt; and thou shalt know no god but me, and besides me there is no saviour.

BSB: Yet I am the LORD your Godever since the land of Egypt;you know no God but Me,for there is no Savior besides Me.

Hosea 13:5

AMP: I knew and regarded you and cared for you in the wilderness,In the land of drought.

ASV: I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

Hosea 13:6

AMP: When they had their pasture, they became satisfied,And being satisfied, their heart became proud (self-centered);Therefore they forgot Me.

ASV: According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.

Hosea 13:7

AMP: So I will be like a lion to them;Like a leopard I will watch and lie in wait [ready to attack] by the road [to Assyria].

ASV: Therefore am I unto them as a lion; as a leopard will I watch by the way;

BSB: So like a lion I will pounce on them;like a leopard I will lurk by the path.

DARBY: And I will be unto them as a lion; as a leopard I will lurk for them by the way;

Hosea 13:8

AMP: I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs,And I will tear open their chests;There I will also devour them like a lioness,As a wild beast would tear them.

ASV: I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them.

BSB: Like a bear robbed of her cubs I will attack them,and I will tear open their chests.There I will devour them like a lion,like a wild beast tearing them apart.

DARBY: I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her [whelps], and will rend the covering of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lioness: the beast of the field shall tear them.

Hosea 13:9

AMP: ¶It is your destruction, O Israel,Because you are against Me, [and have rebelled] against your help.

ASV: It is thy destruction, O Israel, that [thou art] against me, against thy help.

BSB: You are destroyed, O Israel,because you are against Me —against your helper.

DARBY: It is thy destruction, O Israel, that [thou art] against me, against thy help.

DRA: Destruction is thy own, 0 Israel: thy help is only in me.

Hosea 13:10

AMP: Where now is your kingThat he may save you [when you are attacked] in all your cities?And your judges of whom you asked,“Give me a king and princes”?

ASV: Where now is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges, of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

BSB: Where is your king nowto save you in all your cities,and the rulers to whom you said,“Give me a king and princes”?

DARBY: Where then is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

Hosea 13:11

AMP: I gave you a king in My anger,And I took him away in My wrath [as punishment].

ASV: I have given thee a king in mine anger, and have taken him away in my wrath.

BSB: So in My anger I gave you a king,and in My wrath I took him away.

Hosea 13:12

AMP: ¶The wickedness of Ephraim [which is not yet completely punished] is bound up [as in a bag];His sin is stored up [for judgment and destruction].

ASV: The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is laid up in store.

BSB: The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;his sin is stored up.

Hosea 13:13

AMP: The pains of childbirth come on him;But he is not a wise son,For it is not the time to delay [his chance at a new birth] as the womb opens [but he ignores the opportunity to change].

ASV: The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for it is time he should not tarry in the place of the breaking forth of children.

BSB: Labor pains come upon him,but he is an unwise son.When the time arrives,he fails to present himself at the opening of the womb.

DARBY: The pangs of a woman in travail shall come upon him: he is a son not wise; for at the time of the breaking forth of children, he was not there.

DRA: The sorrows of a woman in labour snail come upon him, he is an unwise son: for now he shall not stand in the breach of the children.

Hosea 13:14

AMP: Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead)?Shall I redeem them from death?O death, where are your thorns?O Sheol, where is your sting?Compassion is hidden from My eyes [because of their failure to repent]. [1 Cor 15:55]

ASV: I will ransom them from the power of Sheol; I will redeem them from death: O death, where are thy plagues? O Sheol, where is thy destruction? repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

BSB: I will ransom them from the power of Sheol;I will redeem them from Death.Where, O Death, are your plagues?Where, O Sheol, is your sting?Compassion is hidden from My eyes.

Hosea 13:15

AMP: ¶For though he flourishes among the reeds (his fellow tribes),An east wind (Assyria) will come,The breath of the Lord rising from the desert;And Ephraim’s spring will become dryAnd his fountain will be dried up.Assyria will plunder his treasury of every precious object.

ASV: Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the breath of Jehovah coming up from the wilderness; and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall make spoil of the treasure of all goodly vessels.

BSB: Although he flourishes among his brothers,an east wind will come —a wind from the LORDrising up from the desert.His fountain will fail,and his spring will run dry.The wind will plunder his treasuryof every precious article.

DARBY: Though he be fruitful among [his] brethren, an east wind shall come, a wind of Jehovah [that] cometh up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

DRA: Because he shall make a separation between brothers: s the Lord will bring a burning wind that shall rise from the desert, and it shall dry up his springs, and shall make his fountain desolate, and he shall carry off the treasure of every desirable vessel.

KJV: Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

Hosea 13:16

AMP: Samaria will be found guilty [and become desolate],Because she rebelled against her God;They will fall by the sword,Their infants will be dashed in pieces,And their pregnant women will be ripped open.

ASV: Samaria shall bear her guilt; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

BSB: Samaria will bear her guiltbecause she has rebelled against her God.They will fall by the sword;their little ones will be dashed to pieces,and their pregnant women ripped open.
