Hosea 4:1

AMP: Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel,For the Lord has a [legal] case with the inhabitants of the land,Because there is no faithfulness [no steadfast love, no dependability] or loyalty or kindnessOr knowledge of God [from personal experience with Him] in the land.

ASV: Hear the word of Jehovah, ye children of Israel; for Jehovah hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.

BSB: Hear the word of the LORD,O children of Israel,for the LORD has a caseagainst the people of the land:“There is no truth, no loving devotion,and no knowledge of God in the land!

Hosea 4:2

AMP: There is [false] swearing of oaths, deception (broken faith), murder, stealing, and adultery;They employ violence, so that one [act of] bloodshed follows closely on another.

ASV: There is nought but swearing and breaking faith, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery; they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

BSB: Cursing and lying,murder and stealing,and adultery are rampant;one act of bloodshed follows another.

Hosea 4:3

AMP: Therefore the land [continually] mourns,And everyone who lives in it languishes [in tragic suffering]Together with the animals of the open country and the birds of the heavens;Even the fish of the sea disappear.

ASV: Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

BSB: Therefore the land mourns,and all who dwell in it will waste awaywith the beasts of the field and the birds of the air;even the fish of the sea disappear.

Hosea 4:4

AMP: ¶Yet let no one find fault, nor let any rebuke [others];For your people are like those who contend with the priest.

ASV: Yet let no man strive, neither let any man reprove; for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

BSB: But let no man contend;let no man offer reproof;for your people are like thosewho contend with a priest.

Hosea 4:5

AMP: So you will stumble in the daytime,And the [false] prophet will also stumble with you in the night;And I will destroy your mother (Israel). [Ex 19:6]

ASV: And thou shalt stumble in the day, and the prophet also shall stumble with thee in the night; and I will destroy thy mother.

Hosea 4:6

AMP: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge [of My law, where I reveal My will].Because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge,I will also reject you from being My priest.Since you have forgotten the law of your God,I will also forget your children.

ASV: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children.

Hosea 4:7

AMP: ¶The more they multiplied [in numbers and increased in power], the more they sinned against Me;I will change their glory into shame.

ASV: As they were multiplied, so they sinned against me: I will change their glory into shame.

Hosea 4:8

AMP: And it shall be: like people, like priest [both are wicked and both will be judged];So I will punish them for their waysAnd repay them for their deeds.

AMP: They will eat, but not have enough;They will play the prostitute, but not increase [their descendants],Because they have stopped giving heed to the Lord.

BSB: They will eat but not be satisfied;they will be promiscuous but not multiply.For they have abandoned the LORD to give themselves

AMP: My people consult their [lifeless] wooden idol, and their [diviner’s] wand gives them oracles.For a spirit of prostitution has led them astray [morally and spiritually],And they have played the prostitute, withdrawing themselves from their God.

ASV: My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them; for the spirit of whoredom hath caused them to err, and they have played the harlot, [departing] from under their God.

AMP: They sacrifice on the tops of the mountainsAnd burn incense on the hills,Under oaks, poplars, and terebinths,Because the shade is pleasant there.Therefore your daughters play the prostituteAnd your brides commit adultery.

ASV: They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters play the harlot, and your brides commit adultery.

BSB: They sacrifice on the mountaintopsand burn offerings on the hills,under oak, poplar, and terebinth,because their shade is pleasant.And so your daughters turn to prostitutionand your daughters-in-law to adultery.

DRA: They offered sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burnt incense upon the hills: under the oak, and the poplar, and the turpentine tree, because the shadow thereof was good: therefore shall your daughters commit fornication, and your spouses shall be adulteresses.

Hosea 4:14

AMP: I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostituteOr your brides when they commit adultery,For the men themselves slip away with prostitutes,And they offer sacrifices with temple prostitutes [who give their bodies in honor of the idol].So the people without understanding [stumble and fall and] come to ruin.

ASV: I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for [the men] themselves go apart with harlots, and they sacrifice with the prostitutes; and the people that doth not understand shall be overthrown.

BSB: I will not punish your daughterswhen they prostitute themselves,nor your daughters-in-lawwhen they commit adultery.For the men themselves go off with prostitutesand offer sacrifices with shrine prostitutes.So a people without understandingwill come to ruin.

DARBY: I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot, nor your daughters-in-law for their committing adultery; for they themselves go aside with harlots, and they sacrifice with prostitutes: and the people that doth not understand shall come to ruin.

DRA: I will not visit upon your daughters when they shell commit fornication, and upon your spouses when they shall commit adultery: because themselves conversed with harlots, and offered sacrifice with the effeminate, and the people that doth not understand shall be beaten.

Hosea 4:15

AMP: ¶Though you, Israel, play the prostitute [by worshiping idols],Do not let Judah become guilty [of the same thing];And do not go to Gilgal [where idols are worshiped],Or go up to Beth-aven (House of Wickedness),Nor swear [oaths in idolatrous worship, saying],“As the Lord lives!”

ASV: Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah liveth.

BSB: Though you prostitute yourself, O Israel,may Judah avoid such guilt!Do not journey to Gilgal,do not go up to Beth-aven,and do not swear on oath,‘As surely as the LORD lives!’

DARBY: Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, let not Judah trespass; and come ye not unto Gilgal, neither go up to Beth-aven, nor swear [As] Jehovah liveth!

DRA: If thou play the harlot, O Israel, at least let not Juda offend: and go ye not into Galgal, and come not up into Bethaven, and do not swear: The Lord liveth.

Hosea 4:16

AMP: For Israel is stubborn,Like a stubborn heifer.Can the Lord now pasture themLike a lamb in a large field?

ASV: For Israel hath behaved himself stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer: now will Jehovah feed them as a lamb in a large place.

BSB: For Israel is as obstinateas a stubborn heifer.Can the LORD now shepherd themlike lambs in an open meadow?

DARBY: For Israel is refractory as an untractable heifer; now will Jehovah feed them as a lamb in a wide [pasture].

DRA: For Israel hath gone astray like a wanton heifer: now will the Lord feed them, as a lamb in a spacious place.

Hosea 4:17

AMP: Ephraim is joined to idols,So let him alone [to suffer the consequences].

Hosea 4:18

AMP: When their liquor is gone [and their drinking parties are over],They habitually go to play the prostitute;Ephraim’s rulers continue to dearly love shame [more than her glory which is the Lord, Israel’s God].

ASV: Their drink is become sour; they play the harlot continually; her rulers dearly love shame.

BSB: When their liquor is gone,they turn to prostitution;their rulers dearly love disgrace.

DARBY: Their drink is sour; they give themselves up to whoredom; her great men passionately love [their] shame.

Hosea 4:19

AMP: The wind [of God’s relentless wrath] has wrapped up Israel in its wings,And [in captivity] they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices [to calves, to sun, to moon, to stars, and to pagan gods].

ASV: The wind hath wrapped her up in its wings; and they shall be put to shame because of their sacrifices.
