Hosea 8:1

AMP: Set the trumpet to your lips [announcing impending judgment]!Like a [great] vulture the enemy comes against the house of the Lord,Because they have broken My covenantAnd transgressed and rebelled against My law.

ASV: [Set] the trumpet to thy mouth. As an eagle [he cometh] against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.

BSB: Put the ram’s horn to your lips!An eagle looms over the house of the LORD,because the people have transgressed My covenantand rebelled against My law.

Hosea 8:2

AMP: Then they will cry out to Me,“My God, we of Israel know You!”

AMP: Israel has rejected the good;The enemy shall pursue him.

AMP: They set up kings, but not from Me [therefore without My blessing];They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.With their silver and their gold they made idols for themselves,That they might be cut off.

Hosea 8:5

AMP: He has rejected your [pagan] calf, O Samaria, saying,“My wrath burns against them.”How long will they be incapable of innocence?

ASV: He hath cast off thy calf, O Samaria; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?

BSB: He has rejected your calf, O Samaria.My anger burns against them.How long will they beincapable of innocence?

DARBY: Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast [thee] off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will they be incapable of purity?

DRA: Thy calf, O Samaria, is cast off, my wrath is kindled against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed ?

Hosea 8:6

AMP: For even this [loathsome calf] is from Israel.A craftsman made it, so it is not God;Surely the calf of Samaria will be broken to pieces and go up in flames.

ASV: For from Israel is even this; the workman made it, and it is no God; yea, the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

BSB: For this thing is from Israel—a craftsman made it, and it is not God.It will be broken to pieces,that calf of Samaria.

DARBY: For from Israel is this also: a workman made it, and it is no God: for the calf of Samaria shall be [broken in] pieces.

Hosea 8:7

AMP: For they sow the wind [in evil]And they reap the whirlwind [in disaster].The standing grain has no growth;It yields no grain.If it were to yield, strangers would swallow it up.

ASV: For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: he hath no standing grain; the blade shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.

BSB: For they sow the wind,and they shall reap the whirlwind.There is no standing grain;what sprouts fails to yield flour.Even if it should produce,the foreigners would swallow it up.

DARBY: For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; should it sprout, it would yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.

DRA: For they shall sow wind, and reap a whirlwind, there is no standing stalk in it, the bud shall yield no meal; end if it should yield, strangers shall eat it.

Hosea 8:8

AMP: ¶Israel is [as if] swallowed up [by enemies];They are now among the nationsLike a vessel [of cheap, coarse pottery] that is useless.

ASV: Israel is swallowed up: now are they among the nations as a vessel wherein none delighteth.

BSB: Israel is swallowed up!Now they are among the nationslike a worthless vessel.

DARBY: Israel is swallowed up: now are they become among the nations as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.

DRA: Israel is swallowed up: now is he become among the nations like an unclean vessel.

Hosea 8:9

AMP: For they have gone up to Assyria,Like a wild donkey wandering alone and taking her own way;Ephraim has hired lovers (pagan allies).

ASV: For they are gone up to Assyria, [like] a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.

BSB: For they have gone up to Assyrialike a wild donkey on its own.Ephraim has hired lovers.

DARBY: For they are gone up [to] Assyria [as] a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.

DRA: For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath given gifts to his lovers.

Hosea 8:10

AMP: Yes, even though [with presents] they hire allies among the nations,Now I will gather them up;And [in a little while] they will begin to grow weak and diminishBecause of the burden imposed by the king of princes [the king of Assyria].

ASV: Yea, though they hire among the nations, now will I gather them; and they begin to be diminished by reason of the burden of the king of princes.

BSB: Though they hire allies among the nations,I will now round them up,and they will begin to diminishunder the oppression of the king of princes.

DARBY: Although they hire among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall begin to be straitened under the burden of the king of princes.

DRA: But even though they shall have hired the nations, now will I gather them together: and they shall rest a while from the burden of the king, and the princes.

Hosea 8:11

AMP: ¶For Ephraim has constructed many altars for sin;They are altars intended for sinning [which multiply his guilt].

ASV: Because Ephraim hath multiplied altars for sinning, altars have been unto him for sinning.

BSB: Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin,they became his altars for sinning.

DARBY: Because Ephraim hath multiplied altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.

DRA: Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin: altars are become to him unto sin.

KJV: Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.

Hosea 8:12

AMP: I wrote for him the ten thousand precepts of My law,But they are regarded as a strange thing [which does not concern him].

ASV: I wrote for him the ten thousand things of my law; but they are counted as a strange thing.

BSB: Though I wrote for them the great things of My law,they regarded them as something strange.

DARBY: I have prescribed unto him the manifold things of my law: they are counted [as] a strange thing.

DRA: I shall write to him my manifold laws, which have been accounted as foreign.

Hosea 8:13

AMP: As for My sacrificial offerings,They sacrifice the meat [as a mere formality] and eat it,But the Lord is not pleased with them and does not accept them.Now He will remember and take into account their wickedness and guilt,And punish them for their sins.They will return [in captivity] to [another] Egypt [that is, Assyria]. [Deut 28:68]

ASV: As for the sacrifices of mine offerings, they sacrifice flesh and eat it; but Jehovah accepteth them not: now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins; they shall return to Egypt.

BSB: Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me,and though they eat the meat,the LORD does not accept them.Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins:They will return to Egypt.

DARBY: They sacrifice flesh [for] the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; Jehovah hath no delight in them. Now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

DRA: They shall offer victims, they shall sacrifice flesh, and shall eat it, and the Lord will not receive them: now will he remember their iniquity, and will visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

KJV: They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

Hosea 8:14

AMP: For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces [and pagan temples],And Judah has built many fortified cities;But I will send a fire upon their cities so that it may consume their palaces and fortresses. [Amos 1:4, 7, 10, 12, 14; 2:2, 5]

ASV: For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and builded palaces; and Judah hath multiplied fortified cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the castles thereof.

BSB: Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces;Judah has multiplied its fortified cities.But I will send fire upon their cities,and it will consume their citadels.

DARBY: For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

DRA: And Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and hath built temples: and Juda hath built many fenced cities: and I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the houses thereof.

KJV: For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
