James 4:1

AMP: What leads to [the unending] quarrels and conflicts among you? Do they not come from your [hedonistic] desires that wage war in your [bodily] members [fighting for control over you]?

ASV: Whence [come] wars and whence [come] fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your pleasures that war in your members?

BSB: What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you?

DARBY: Whence [come] wars and whence fightings among you? [Is it] not thence, from your pleasures, which war in your members?

James 4:2

AMP: You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your lust goes unfulfilled; so you murder. You are envious and cannot obtain [the object of your envy]; so you fight and battle. You do not have because you do not ask [it of God]. [1 John 3:15]

ASV: Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not.

BSB: You crave what you do not have; you kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask.

DARBY: Ye lust and have not: ye kill and are full of envy, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war; ye have not because ye ask not.

DRA: You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not.

ASV: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures.

BSB: And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.

DARBY: Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask evilly, that ye may consume [it] in your pleasures.

DRA: You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences.

KJV: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

James 4:4

AMP: You adulteresses [disloyal sinners—flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world’s friend [that is, loving the things of the world] is being God’s enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

ASV: Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God.

BSB: You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God.

James 4:5

AMP: Or do you think that the Scripture says to no purpose that the [human] spirit which He has made to dwell in us lusts with envy? [Gen 6:5]

James 4:6

AMP: But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, “God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].” [Prov 3:34]

ASV: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

BSB: But He gives us more grace. This is why it says:“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:11

AMP: Believers, do not speak against or slander one another. He who speaks [self-righteously] against a brother or judges his brother [hypocritically], speaks against the Law and judges the Law. If you judge the Law, you are not a doer of the Law but a judge of it.

ASV: Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

BSB: Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.

James 4:12

AMP: There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy [the one God who has the absolute power of life and death]; but who are you to [hypocritically or self-righteously] pass judgment on your neighbor?

ASV: One [only] is the lawgiver and judge, [even] he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?

BSB: There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

DARBY: One is the lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy: but who art *thou* who judgest thy neighbour?

AMP: Come now [and pay attention to this], you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and carry on our business and make a profit.”

ASV: Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain:

BSB: Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.”

James 4:14

AMP: Yet you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen in your life tomorrow. [What is secure in your life?] You are merely a vapor [like a puff of smoke or a wisp of steam from a cooking pot] that is visible for a little while and then vanishes [into thin air].

ASV: whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

BSB: You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

DARBY: ye who do not know what will be on the morrow, ([for] what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, appearing for a little while, and then disappearing,)

DRA: Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow.

KJV: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

KJV: But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

James 4:17

AMP: So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin.

ASV: To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

BSB: Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.

DARBY: To him therefore who knows how to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

DRA: To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin.
