Job 14:1

ASV: Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.

DARBY: Man, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

DRA: Man born of a woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.

KJV: Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

Job 14:2

ASV: He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

DARBY: He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; and he fleeth as a shadow, and continueth not.

DRA: Who cometh forth like a flower, and is destroyed, and fleeth as a shadow, and never continueth in the same state.

Job 14:3

ASV: And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?

DRA: And dost thou think it meet to open thy eyes upon such an one, and to bring him into judgment with thee?

Job 14:4

ASV: Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

DARBY: Who can bring a clean [man] out of the unclean? Not one!

DRA: Who can make him clean that is conceived of unclean seed ? is it not thou who only art?

KJV: Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

Job 14:5

ASV: Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

DARBY: If his days are determined, if the number of his months is with thee, [and] thou hast appointed his bounds which he must not pass,

DRA: The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with thee: thou hast appointed his bounds which cannot be passed.

KJV: Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

Job 14:6

ASV: Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

DARBY: Look away from him; and let him rest, till he accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

DRA: Depart a little from him, that he may rest, until his wished for day come, as that of the hireling.

KJV: Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

Job 14:7

ASV: For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

DARBY: For there is hope for a tree: if it be cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender branch will not cease;

DRA: A tree hath hope: if it be cut, it groweth green again, and the boughs thereof sprout.

KJV: For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Job 14:8

ASV: Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;

DARBY: Though its root grow old in the earth, and its stock die in the ground,

DRA: If its root be old in the earth, and its stock be dead in the dust:

KJV: Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

Job 14:9

ASV: Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.

DARBY: Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a young plant.

DRA: At the scent of water, it shall spring, and bring forth leaves, as when it was first planted.

Job 14:10

ASV: But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

DARBY: But a man dieth, and is prostrate; yea, man expireth, and where is he?

DRA: But man when he shall be dead, and stripped and consumed, I pray you where is he?

KJV: But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

Job 14:11

ASV: [As] the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;

DARBY: The waters recede from the lake, and the river wasteth and drieth up:

DRA: As if the waters should depart out of the sea, and an emptied river should be dried up:

KJV: As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

ASV: So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.

DARBY: So man lieth down, and riseth not again; till the heavens be no more, they do not awake, nor are raised out of their sleep.

DRA: So man when he is fallen asleep shall not rise again; till the heavens be broken, he shall not awake, nor rise up out of his sleep.

KJV: So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

Job 14:13

ASV: Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

DARBY: Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, that thou wouldest keep me secret until thine anger be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me,

DRA: Who will grant me this, that thou mayest protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a. time when thou wilt remember me?

KJV: Oh that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Job 14:14

ASV: If a man die, shall he live [again]? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.

DARBY: (If a man die, shall he live [again]?) all the days of my time of toil would I wait, till my change should come:

DRA: Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come.

KJV: If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Job 14:15

ASV: Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.

DARBY: Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee; thou wouldest have a desire after the work of thy hands.

DRA: Thou shalt call me, and I will answer thee: to the work of thy hands thou shalt reach out thy right hand.

KJV: Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

ASV: But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?

DARBY: For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

DRA: Thou indeed hast numbered my steps, but spare my sins.

Job 14:17

ASV: My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.

DARBY: My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou heapest up mine iniquity.

DRA: Thou hast sealed up my offences as it were in a bag, but hast cured my iniquity.

KJV: My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

ASV: But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;

DARBY: And indeed a mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of its place;

Job 14:19

ASV: The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.

DRA: Waters wear away the stones, and with inundation the ground by little and little is washed away: so in like manner thou shalt destroy man.

ASV: Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

DRA: Thou hast strengthened him for a little while, that he may pass away for ever: thou shalt change his face, and shalt send him away.

ASV: His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

ASV: But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.
