Job 20:1

ASV: Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

Job 20:2

ASV: Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me, Even by reason of my haste that is in me.

DARBY: Therefore do my thoughts give me an answer, and for this is my haste within me.

DRA: Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.

KJV: Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.

Job 20:3

ASV: I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame; And the spirit of my understanding answereth me.

DARBY: I hear a reproof putting me to shame; and [my] spirit answereth me by mine understanding.

DRA: The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.

KJV: I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.

Job 20:4

ASV: Knowest thou [not] this of old time, Since man was placed upon earth,

DARBY: Knowest thou [not] this, that of old, since man was placed upon earth,

Job 20:5

ASV: That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless but for a moment?

DARBY: The exultation of the wicked is short, and the joy of the ungodly man but for a moment?

DRA: that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.

KJV: That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Job 20:6

ASV: Though his height mount up to the heavens, And his head reach unto the clouds;

DARBY: Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds,

DRA: If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:

KJV: Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;

Job 20:7

ASV: Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: They that have seen him shall say, Where is he?

DARBY: Like his own dung doth he perish for ever; they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

DRA: In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?

ASV: He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

DARBY: He flieth away as a dream, and is not found; and is chased away as a vision of the night.

DRA: As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:

Job 20:9

ASV: The eye which saw him shall see him no more; Neither shall his place any more behold him.

ASV: His children shall seek the favor of the poor, And his hands shall give back his wealth.

Job 20:11

ASV: His bones are full of his youth, But it shall lie down with him in the dust.

ASV: Though he spare it, and will not let it go, But keep it still within his mouth;

ASV: Yet his food in his bowels is turned, It is the gall of asps within him.

ASV: He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again; God will cast them out of his belly.

ASV: He shall not look upon the rivers, The flowing streams of honey and butter.

Job 20:18

ASV: That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; According to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice.

DARBY: That which he laboured for shall he restore, and not swallow down; its restitution shall be according to the value, and he shall not rejoice [therein].

DRA: He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.

Job 20:19

ASV: For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.

DRA: Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.

Job 20:20

ASV: Because he knew no quietness within him, He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth.

DRA: And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.

Job 20:21

ASV: There was nothing left that he devoured not; Therefore his prosperity shall not endure.

DARBY: Nothing escaped his greediness; therefore his prosperity shall not endure.

DRA: There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:

KJV: There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.

Job 20:22

ASV: In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him.

DRA: When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.

Job 20:23

ASV: When he is about to fill his belly, [God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him, And will rain it upon him while he is eating.

DARBY: It shall be that, to fill his belly, he will cast his fierce anger upon him, and will rain it upon him into his flesh.

DRA: May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.

Job 20:24

ASV: He shall flee from the iron weapon, And the bow of brass shall strike him through.

DARBY: If he have fled from the iron weapon, the bow of brass shall strike him through.

DRA: He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.

KJV: He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.

Job 20:25

ASV: He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body; Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall: Terrors are upon him.

DARBY: He draweth it forth; it cometh out of his body, and the glittering point out of his gall: terrors are upon him.

DRA: The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.

Job 20:26

ASV: All darkness is laid up for his treasures: A fire not blown [by man] shall devour him; It shall consume that which is left in his tent.

DARBY: All darkness is laid up for his treasures: a fire not blown shall devour him; it shall feed upon what is left in his tent.

DRA: All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.

Job 20:27

ASV: The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, And the earth shall rise up against him.
