Psalms 40:1

AMP: I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord;And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

ASV: I waited patiently for Jehovah; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

BSB: I waited patiently for the LORD;He inclined to me and heard my cry.

DARBY: {To the chief Musician. Of David. A Psalm.} I waited patiently for Jehovah; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

Psalms 40:2

AMP: He brought me up out of a horrible pit [of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay,And He set my feet upon a rock, steadying my footsteps and establishing my path.

ASV: He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

BSB: He lifted me up from the pit of despair,out of the miry clay;He set my feet upon a rock,and made my footsteps firm.

Psalms 40:3

AMP: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;Many will see and fear [with great reverence]And will trust confidently in the Lord. [Ps 5:11]

ASV: And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in Jehovah.

Psalms 40:4

AMP: ¶Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who makes the Lord his trust,And does not regard the proud nor those who lapse into lies.

ASV: Blessed is the man that maketh Jehovah his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

BSB: Blessed is the manwho has made the LORD his trust,who has not turned to the proud,nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

DARBY: Blessed is the man that hath made Jehovah his confidence, and turneth not to the proud, and to such as turn aside to lies.

Psalms 40:5

AMP: Many, O Lord my God, are the wonderful works which You have done,And Your thoughts toward us;There is none to compare with You.If I would declare and speak of your wonders,They would be too many to count.

ASV: Many, O Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward; They cannot be set in order unto thee; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.

BSB: Many, O LORD my God,are the wonders You have done,and the plans You have for us —none can compare to You —if I proclaim and declare them,they are more than I can count.

DARBY: Thou, O Jehovah my God, hast multiplied thy marvellous works, and thy thoughts toward us: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee; would I declare and speak [them], they are more than can be numbered.

DRA: Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.

Psalms 40:6

AMP: ¶Sacrifice and meal offering You do not desire, nor do You delight in them;You have opened my ears and given me the capacity to hear [and obey Your word];Burnt offerings and sin offerings You do not require. [Mic 6:6-8]

ASV: Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.

DRA: Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God : and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number.

Psalms 40:7

AMP: Then I said, “Behold, I come [to the throne];In the scroll of the book it is written of me.

ASV: Then said I, Lo, I am come; In the roll of the book it is written of me:

Psalms 40:8

AMP: “I delight to do Your will, O my God;Your law is within my heart.” [Jer 31:33; Heb 10:5-9]

ASV: I delight to do thy will, O my God; Yea, thy law is within my heart.

DARBY: To do thy good pleasure, my God, is my delight, and thy law is within my heart.

Psalms 40:9

AMP: ¶I have proclaimed good news of righteousness [and the joy that comes from obedience to You] in the great assembly;Behold, I will not restrain my lips [from proclaiming Your righteousness],As You know, O Lord.

ASV: I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Jehovah, thou knowest.

Psalms 40:10

AMP: I have not concealed Your righteousness within my heart;I have proclaimed Your faithfulness and Your salvation.I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly. [Acts 20:20, 27]

ASV: I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.

Psalms 40:11

AMP: ¶Do not withhold Your compassion and tender mercy from me, O Lord;Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me.

ASV: Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Jehovah; Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

BSB: O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me;Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.

Psalms 40:12

AMP: For innumerable evils have encompassed me;My sins have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see.They are more numerous than the hairs of my head,And my heart has failed me.

ASV: For innumerable evils have compassed me about; Mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; And my heart hath failed me.

BSB: For evils without number surround me;my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see.They are more than the hairs of my head,and my heart has failed within me.

Psalms 40:13

AMP: ¶Be pleased, O Lord, to save me;O Lord, make haste to help me.

ASV: Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me: Make haste to help me, O Jehovah.

BSB: Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me;hurry, O LORD, to help me.

DRA: For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head : and my heart hath forsaken me.

Psalms 40:14

AMP: Let those be ashamed and humiliated togetherWho seek my life to destroy it;Let those be turned back [in defeat] and dishonoredWho delight in my hurt.

ASV: Let them be put to shame and confounded together That seek after my soul to destroy it: Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor That delight in my hurt.

BSB: May those who seek my lifebe ashamed and confounded;may those who wish me harmbe repelled and humiliated.

DARBY: Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be turned backward and confounded that take pleasure in mine adversity;

Psalms 40:15

AMP: Let those be appalled and desolate because of their shameWho say to me, “Aha, aha [rejoicing in my misfortune]!”

ASV: Let them be desolate by reason of their shame That say unto me, Aha, aha.

BSB: May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!”be appalled at their own shame.

DARBY: Let them be desolate, because of their shame, that say unto me, Aha! Aha!

DRA: Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me.

Psalms 40:16

AMP: Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;Let those who love Your salvation say continually,“The Lord be magnified!”

ASV: Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: Let such as love thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified.

BSB: May all who seek Yourejoice and be glad in You;may those who love Your salvationalways say, “The LORD be magnified!”

Psalms 40:17

AMP: Even though I am afflicted and needy,Still the Lord takes thought and is mindful of me.You are my help and my rescuer.O my God, do not delay. [Ps 70:1-5; 1 Pet 5:7]

ASV: But I am poor and needy; [Yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God. Psalm 41 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
