Psalms 40:1

ASV: I waited patiently for Jehovah; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

DARBY: {To the chief Musician. Of David. A Psalm.} I waited patiently for Jehovah; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

Psalms 40:2

ASV: He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

DARBY: And he brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock; he hath established my goings:

DRA: With expectation I have waited for the Lord, and he was attentive to me.

Psalms 40:3

ASV: And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in Jehovah.

DARBY: And he hath put a new song in my mouth, praise unto our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall confide in Jehovah.

DRA: And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps.

Psalms 40:4

ASV: Blessed is the man that maketh Jehovah his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

DARBY: Blessed is the man that hath made Jehovah his confidence, and turneth not to the proud, and to such as turn aside to lies.

DRA: And he put a new canticle into my mouth, a song to our God. Many shall see, and shall fear : and they shall hope in the Lord.

KJV: Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Psalms 40:5

ASV: Many, O Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward; They cannot be set in order unto thee; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.

DARBY: Thou, O Jehovah my God, hast multiplied thy marvellous works, and thy thoughts toward us: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee; would I declare and speak [them], they are more than can be numbered.

DRA: Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.

KJV: Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Psalms 40:6

ASV: Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.

DARBY: Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire: ears hast thou prepared me. Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not demanded;

DRA: Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God : and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number.

Psalms 40:7

ASV: Then said I, Lo, I am come; In the roll of the book it is written of me:

DARBY: Then said I, Behold, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of me

DRA: Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require :

Psalms 40:8

ASV: I delight to do thy will, O my God; Yea, thy law is within my heart.

DARBY: To do thy good pleasure, my God, is my delight, and thy law is within my heart.

DRA: then said I, Behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me

Psalms 40:9

ASV: I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Jehovah, thou knowest.

DARBY: I have published righteousness in the great congregation: behold, I have not withheld my lips, Jehovah, *thou* knowest.

DRA: that I should do thy will : O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart.

KJV: I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.

Psalms 40:10

ASV: I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.

DARBY: I have not hidden thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

ASV: Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Jehovah; Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

DRA: I have not hid thy justice within my heart : I have declared thy truth and thy salvation. I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great council.

Psalms 40:12

ASV: For innumerable evils have compassed me about; Mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; And my heart hath failed me.

DARBY: For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head: and my heart hath failed me.

DRA: Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me : thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me.

Psalms 40:13

ASV: Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me: Make haste to help me, O Jehovah.

DARBY: Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me; Jehovah, make haste to my help.

DRA: For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head : and my heart hath forsaken me.

Psalms 40:14

ASV: Let them be put to shame and confounded together That seek after my soul to destroy it: Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor That delight in my hurt.

DARBY: Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be turned backward and confounded that take pleasure in mine adversity;

DRA: Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me, look down, O Lord, to help me.

KJV: Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.

Psalms 40:15

ASV: Let them be desolate by reason of their shame That say unto me, Aha, aha.

DARBY: Let them be desolate, because of their shame, that say unto me, Aha! Aha!

DRA: Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me.

KJV: Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.

Psalms 40:16

ASV: Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: Let such as love thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified.

DARBY: Let all those that seek thee be glad and rejoice in thee; let such as love thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified!

DRA: Let them immediately bear their confusion, that say to me : 'T is well, 't is well.

Psalms 40:17

ASV: But I am poor and needy; [Yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God. Psalm 41 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

DARBY: But I am afflicted and needy: the Lord thinketh upon me. Thou art my help and my deliverer: my God, make no delay.

DRA: Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee : and let such as love thy salvation say always : The Lord be magnified.

KJV: But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Psalms 40:18

DRA: But I am a beggar and poor : the Lord is careful for me. Thou art my helper and my protector : O my God, be not slack.
