Psalms 49:1

ASV: Hear this, all ye peoples; Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,

DARBY: {To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.} Hear this, all ye peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world:

DRA: Unto the end, a psalm for the sons of Core.

Psalms 49:2

ASV: Both low and high, Rich and poor together.

DARBY: Both men of low and men of high degree, rich and poor alike.

DRA: Hear these things, all ye nations: give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.

Psalms 49:3

ASV: My mouth shall speak wisdom; And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

DARBY: My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding:

DRA: All you that are earthborn, and you sons of men: both rich and poor together.

KJV: My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

Psalms 49:4

ASV: I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

DARBY: I will incline mine ear to a parable, I will open my riddle upon the harp.

Psalms 49:5

ASV: Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, When iniquity at my heels compasseth me about?

DARBY: Wherefore should I fear in the days of adversity, [when] the iniquity of my supplanters encompasseth me?

DRA: I will incline my ear to a parable; I will open my proposition on the psaltery.

KJV: Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

Psalms 49:6

ASV: They that trust in their wealth, And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

DARBY: They depend upon their wealth, and boast themselves in the abundance of their riches.

DRA: Why shall I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

Psalms 49:7

ASV: None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him;

Psalms 49:8

ASV: (For the redemption of their life is costly, And it faileth for ever;)

DARBY: (For the redemption of their soul is costly, and must be given up for ever,)

DRA: No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: he shall not give to God his ransom,

KJV: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

Psalms 49:9

ASV: That he should still live alway, That he should not see corruption.

DARBY: That he should still live perpetually, [and] not see corruption.

DRA: Nor the price of the redemption of his soul: and shall labour for ever,

KJV: That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

Psalms 49:10

ASV: For he shall see it. Wise men die; The fool and the brutish alike perish, And leave their wealth to others.

DARBY: For he seeth that wise men die; all alike, the fool and the brutish perish, and they leave their wealth to others.

Psalms 49:11

ASV: Their inward thought is, [that] their houses [shall continue] for ever, [And] their dwelling-places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.

DARBY: Their inward thought is, that their houses are for ever, their dwelling-places from generation to generation: they call the lands after their own names.

DRA: He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: the senseless and the fool shall perish together: And they shall leave their riches to strangers:

KJV: Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

Psalms 49:12

ASV: But man [being] in honor abideth not: He is like the beasts that perish.

DARBY: Nevertheless, man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

DRA: and their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever. Their dwelling places to all generations: they have called their lands by their names.

KJV: Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

Psalms 49:13

ASV: This their way is their folly: Yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah

DARBY: This their way is their folly, yet they that come after them delight in their sayings. Selah.

DRA: And man when he was in honour did not understand; he is compared to senseless beasts, and is become like to them.

KJV: This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

Psalms 49:14

ASV: They are appointed as a flock for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume, That there be no habitation for it.

DARBY: Like sheep are they laid in Sheol: Death feedeth on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their comeliness shall be for Sheol to consume, that there be no habitation for them.

DRA: This way of theirs is a stumblingblock to them: and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth.

KJV: Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

Psalms 49:15

ASV: But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; For he will receive me. Selah

DARBY: But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol: for he will receive me. Selah.

DRA: They are laid in hell like sheep: death shall feed upon them. And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their help shall decay in hell from their glory.

KJV: But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

Psalms 49:16

ASV: Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, When the glory of his house is increased.

DARBY: Be not afraid when a man becometh rich, when the glory of his house is increased:

DRA: But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, when he shall receive me.

KJV: Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

ASV: For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.

DARBY: For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

DRA: Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased.

Psalms 49:18

ASV: Though while he lived he blessed his soul (And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself,)

DARBY: Though he blessed his soul in his lifetime, and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself,

DRA: For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him.

Psalms 49:19

ASV: He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see the light.
