Psalms 49:1

AMP: Hear this, all peoples;Listen carefully, all inhabitants of the world,

ASV: Hear this, all ye peoples; Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,

BSB: Hear this, all you peoples;listen, all inhabitants of the world,

Psalms 49:2

AMP: Both low and high,Rich and poor together:

ASV: Both low and high, Rich and poor together.

BSB: both low and high,rich and poor alike.

DARBY: Both men of low and men of high degree, rich and poor alike.

DRA: Hear these things, all ye nations: give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.

Psalms 49:3

AMP: My mouth will speak wisdom,And the meditation of my heart will be understanding.

ASV: My mouth shall speak wisdom; And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

BSB: My mouth will impart wisdom,and the meditation of my heart will bring understanding.

DARBY: My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding:

Psalms 49:4

AMP: I will incline my ear and consent to a proverb;On the lyre I will unfold my riddle.

ASV: I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

Psalms 49:5

AMP: ¶Why should I fear in the days of evil,When the wickedness of those who would betray me surrounds me [on every side],

ASV: Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, When iniquity at my heels compasseth me about?

BSB: Why should I fear in times of trouble,when wicked usurpers surround me?

DARBY: Wherefore should I fear in the days of adversity, [when] the iniquity of my supplanters encompasseth me?

DRA: I will incline my ear to a parable; I will open my proposition on the psaltery.

KJV: Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

Psalms 49:6

AMP: Even those who trust in and rely on their wealthAnd boast of the abundance of their riches?

ASV: They that trust in their wealth, And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

BSB: They trust in their wealthand boast in their great riches.

DARBY: They depend upon their wealth, and boast themselves in the abundance of their riches.

DRA: Why shall I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

Psalms 49:7

AMP: None of them can by any means redeem [either himself or] his brother,Nor give to God a ransom for him—

ASV: None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him;

BSB: No man can possibly redeem his brotheror pay his ransom to God.

Psalms 49:8

AMP: For the ransom of his soul is too costly,And he should cease trying forever—

ASV: (For the redemption of their life is costly, And it faileth for ever;)

BSB: For the redemption of his soul is costly,and never can payment suffice,

DARBY: (For the redemption of their soul is costly, and must be given up for ever,)

DRA: No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: he shall not give to God his ransom,

Psalms 49:9

AMP: So that he should live on eternally,That he should never see the pit (grave) and undergo decay.

ASV: That he should still live alway, That he should not see corruption.

BSB: that he should live on foreverand not see decay.

DARBY: That he should still live perpetually, [and] not see corruption.

DRA: Nor the price of the redemption of his soul: and shall labour for ever,

KJV: That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

Psalms 49:10

AMP: ¶For he sees that even wise men die;The fool and the stupid alike perishAnd leave their wealth to others. [Eccl 2:12-16]

ASV: For he shall see it. Wise men die; The fool and the brutish alike perish, And leave their wealth to others.

BSB: For it is clear that wise men die,and the foolish and the senseless both perishand leave their wealth to others.

DARBY: For he seeth that wise men die; all alike, the fool and the brutish perish, and they leave their wealth to others.

DRA: and shall still live unto the end.

KJV: For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Psalms 49:11

AMP: Their inward thought is that their houses will continue forever,And their dwelling places to all generations;They have named their lands after their own names [ignoring God].

ASV: Their inward thought is, [that] their houses [shall continue] for ever, [And] their dwelling-places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.

BSB: Their graves are their eternal homes —their dwellings for endless generations —even though their lands were their namesakes.

DARBY: Their inward thought is, that their houses are for ever, their dwelling-places from generation to generation: they call the lands after their own names.

DRA: He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: the senseless and the fool shall perish together: And they shall leave their riches to strangers:

KJV: Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

Psalms 49:12

AMP: But man, with all his [self] honor and pomp, will not endure;He is like the beasts that perish.

ASV: But man [being] in honor abideth not: He is like the beasts that perish.

BSB: But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure;he is like the beasts that perish.

DARBY: Nevertheless, man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

DRA: and their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever. Their dwelling places to all generations: they have called their lands by their names.

Psalms 49:13

AMP: ¶This is the fate of those who are foolishly confident,And of those after them who approve [and are influenced by] their words. Selah.

ASV: This their way is their folly: Yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah

BSB: This is the fate of the foolishand their followers who endorse their sayings.Selah

DARBY: This their way is their folly, yet they that come after them delight in their sayings. Selah.

DRA: And man when he was in honour did not understand; he is compared to senseless beasts, and is become like to them.

KJV: This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

Psalms 49:14

AMP: Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead);Death will be their shepherd;And the upright shall rule over them in the morning,And their form and beauty shall be for Sheol to consume,So that they have no dwelling [on earth].

ASV: They are appointed as a flock for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume, That there be no habitation for it.

BSB: Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.Death will be their shepherd.The upright will rule them in the morning,and their form will decay in Sheol,far from their lofty abode.

DARBY: Like sheep are they laid in Sheol: Death feedeth on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their comeliness shall be for Sheol to consume, that there be no habitation for them.

DRA: This way of theirs is a stumblingblock to them: and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth.

KJV: Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

Psalms 49:15

AMP: But God will redeem my life from the power of Sheol,For He will receive me. Selah.

ASV: But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; For he will receive me. Selah

BSB: But God will redeem my life from Sheol,for He will surely take me to Himself.Selah

DARBY: But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol: for he will receive me. Selah.

DRA: They are laid in hell like sheep: death shall feed upon them. And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their help shall decay in hell from their glory.

KJV: But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

Psalms 49:16

AMP: ¶Be not afraid when [an ungodly] man becomes rich,When the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

ASV: Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, When the glory of his house is increased.

BSB: Do not be afraid when a man grows rich,when the splendor of his house increases.

DARBY: Be not afraid when a man becometh rich, when the glory of his house is increased:

DRA: But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, when he shall receive me.

KJV: Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

Psalms 49:17

AMP: For when he dies he will carry nothing away;His glory will not descend after him.

ASV: For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.

BSB: For when he dies, he will carry nothing away;his abundance will not follow him down.

DARBY: For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

DRA: Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased.

Psalms 49:18

AMP: Though while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous—And though people praise you when you do well for yourself—

ASV: Though while he lived he blessed his soul (And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself,)

BSB: Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul —and men praise you when you prosper —

DARBY: Though he blessed his soul in his lifetime, and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself,

DRA: For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him.

Psalms 49:19

AMP: He shall go to the generation of his fathers;They shall never again see the light.

ASV: He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see the light.

BSB: he will join the generation of his fathers,who will never see the light of day.

DARBY: It shall go to the generation of his fathers: they shall never see light.

DRA: For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: and he will praise thee when thou shalt do well to him.

Psalms 49:20

AMP: A man [who is held] in honor,Yet who lacks [spiritual] understanding and a teachable heart, is like the beasts that perish.

ASV: Man that is in honor, and understandeth not, Is like the beasts that perish. Psalm 50 A Psalm of Asaph.

BSB: A man who has riches without understandingis like the beasts that perish.

DARBY: Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

DRA: He shall go in to the generations of his fathers: and he shall never see light.

Psalms 49:21

DRA: Man when he was in honour did not understand: he hath been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them.
