Psalms 55:1

ASV: Give ear to my prayer, O God; And hide not thyself from my supplication.

DARBY: {To the chief Musician. On stringed instruments: an instruction. Of David.} Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.

Psalms 55:2

ASV: Attend unto me, and answer me: I am restless in my complaint, and moan,

Psalms 55:3

ASV: Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked; For they cast iniquity upon me, And in anger they persecute me.

Psalms 55:4

ASV: My heart is sore pained within me: And the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

Psalms 55:6

ASV: And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! Then would I fly away, and be at rest.

Psalms 55:7

ASV: Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah

DARBY: Behold, I would flee afar off, I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah;

DRA: My heart is troubled within me: and the fear of death is fallen upon me.

Psalms 55:8

ASV: I would haste me to a shelter From the stormy wind and tempest.

ASV: Destroy, O Lord, [and] divide their tongue; For I have seen violence and strife in the city.

Psalms 55:11

ASV: Wickedness is in the midst thereof: Oppression and guile depart not from its streets.

DRA: I waited for him that hath saved me from pusillanimity of spirit, and a storm.

Psalms 55:12

ASV: For it was not an enemy that reproached me; Then I could have borne it: Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; Then I would have hid myself from him:

DARBY: For it is not an enemy that hath reproached me then could I have borne it; neither is it he that hateth me that hath magnified [himself] against me then would I have hidden myself from him;

Psalms 55:13

ASV: But it was thou, a man mine equal, My companion, and my familiar friend.

DRA: Day and night shall iniquity surround it upon its walls: and in the midst thereof are labour,

KJV: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

Psalms 55:14

ASV: We took sweet counsel together; We walked in the house of God with the throng.

DARBY: We who held sweet intercourse together. To the house of God we walked amid the throng.

DRA: and injustice. And usury and deceit have not departed from its streets.

KJV: We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

Psalms 55:15

ASV: Let death come suddenly upon them, Let them go down alive into Sheol; For wickedness is in their dwelling, in the midst of them.

DARBY: Let death seize upon them, let them go down alive into Sheol. For wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst.

DRA: For if my enemy had reviled me, I would verily have borne with it. And if he that hated me had spoken great things against me, I would perhaps have hidden myself from him.

Psalms 55:16

ASV: As for me, I will call upon God; And Jehovah will save me.

Psalms 55:17

ASV: Evening, and morning, and at noonday, will I complain, and moan; And he will hear my voice.

Psalms 55:18

ASV: He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me; For they were many [that strove] with me.

DRA: Let death come upon them, and let them go down alive into hell. For there is wickedness in their dwellings: in the midst of them.

Psalms 55:19

ASV: God will hear, and answer them, Even he that abideth of old, Selah [The men] who have no changes, And who fear not God.

DARBY: God will hear, and afflict them: he that is seated of old, (Selah) because there is no change in them, and they fear not God.

DRA: But I have cried to God: and the Lord will save me.

KJV: God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

Psalms 55:20

ASV: He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: He hath profaned his covenant.

DRA: Evening and morning, and at noon I will speak and declare: and he shall hear my voice.

Psalms 55:21

ASV: His mouth was smooth as butter, But his heart was war: His words were softer than oil, Yet were they drawn swords.

DARBY: Smooth were the milky [words] of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet are they drawn swords.

DRA: He shall redeem my soul in peace from them that draw near to me: for among many they were with me.

Psalms 55:22

ASV: Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

DRA: God shall hear, and the Eternal shall humble them. For there is no change with them, and they have not feared God:

Psalms 55:23

ASV: But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction: Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in thee. Psalm 56 For the Chief Musician; set to Jonath elem rehokim. [A Psalm] of David. Michtam: when the Philistines took him in Gath.

DARBY: And thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. But as for me, I will confide in thee.

DRA: he hath stretched forth his hand to repay. They have defiled his covenant,

KJV: But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Psalms 55:24

DRA: they are divided by the wrath Of his countenance, and his heart hath drawn near. His words are smoother than oil, and

Psalms 55:25

DRA: Cast thy care upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall not suffer the just to waver for ever.

Psalms 55:26

DRA: But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee, O Lord.
